CS2 has 18 Competitive ranks earned on a per-map basis, and Premier mode uses a numeric CS Rating divided into color-coded tiers. Both systems run in parallel and update independently — here is everything you need to know about how each one works.

CS2 map ranks: why your rank is different on every map
Competitive ranks are tracked per map. Your rank on Mirage is completely separate from your rank on Inferno. You can be Legendary Eagle on maps you have played for years and Gold Nova on ones you rarely touch — both numbers are accurate reflections of your skill on those specific maps.
To receive your first rank on a map, you need two wins on it [VERIFY: current win requirement]. After that, each match result moves the rank up, down, or keeps it flat based on a hidden MMR. Individual performance matters alongside the result — a strong game in a loss softens the penalty, and a passive win may produce a smaller gain than expected.
The practical takeaway: load a map in practice mode before queuing ranked on it. Familiarity with chokepoints and basic angles is worth more than the time it costs.
Premier mode and CS Rating tiers
Premier mode replaces named ranks with a single numerical CS Rating that applies across all maps. After 10 placement matches you receive a number that goes up or down after every match based on your result and the rating difference between the two teams. Beating higher-rated opponents awards more points; losing to lower-rated ones costs more. For a deeper look at the underlying maths, see our article on how the CS2 Elo system works.
The rating is color-coded into seven tiers [VERIFY: current bands]:
| Color | CS Rating band |
|---|---|
| Gray | Below 5,000 |
| Light Blue | 5,000 – 9,999 |
| Blue | 10,000 – 14,999 |
| Purple | 15,000 – 19,999 |
| Pink | 20,000 – 24,999 |
| Red | 25,000 – 29,999 |
| Yellow / Gold | 30,000 and above |
Yellow / Gold is the Premier equivalent of Global Elite. Premier requires Prime Status — without it you can access Competitive ranks but not the CS Rating or seasonal leaderboard.
CS2 rank distribution
The majority of the CS2 playerbase sits in the Gold Nova and Master Guardian range for Competitive, with the upper tiers — Legendary Eagle and above — representing a smaller share of active players. In Premier, most players fall in the Light Blue to Blue range, and the Yellow / Gold tier is genuinely rare. Exact percentages shift with each season, so check a current community tracker for up-to-date figures [VERIFY source].
Competitive vs Premier — which one matters?
They serve different purposes, and most serious players use both.
Competitive is better for focused map development. You queue for a specific map, build a rank there, and can specialize without your overall profile taking a hit on maps you have not studied yet. It is also more accessible — no Prime Status required.
Premier is the better measure of overall skill. A single rating across all maps, seasonal leaderboards, and map bans before each match make it a more complete competitive format. It is what most players refer to when talking about their rank. If you are weighing Premier against third-party platforms, our FACEIT vs Premier breakdown covers the differences.
One important point: the two systems are completely separate. Grinding Competitive matches does nothing for your Premier rating, and vice versa. Both systems also have inactivity decay — play consistently or your rank can drop without you losing a single match.
How to rank up faster
Winning drives rank progression in both systems, so everything comes back to win rate. A few areas have the highest return on time invested:
- Aim and movement. The gap between Silver and Gold Nova is often crosshair placement and basic recoil control. Workshop maps like Aim Botz and Recoil Master let you drill both without risking your rating.
- Map knowledge. Learning chokepoints, common angles, and basic grenade lineups gives you a structural advantage that compensates for mechanical gaps. Knowing how to peek correctly is one of the fastest mechanical habits to build.
- Economy management. Knowing when to save for a full buy instead of half-buying now plays out across an entire match. Watch your ADR alongside your win rate — it is one of the clearest signals of whether you are pulling your weight each round.
- Communication. Even one consistent teammate who calls positions and coordinates buys reduces the randomness that costs rounds at every level below Global Elite.

FAQ
How many ranks are in CS2?
CS2 Competitive mode has 18 named ranks, from Silver I at the bottom to Global Elite at the top. Premier mode does not use named ranks — it uses a numeric CS Rating divided into seven color-coded tiers. Both systems run at the same time and are tracked separately.
What is the highest rank in CS2?
In Competitive mode, the highest rank is Global Elite. In Premier mode, the highest tier is Yellow / Gold, which starts at a CS Rating of 30,000. Both represent the top of their respective systems and are reached by a very small percentage of active players [VERIFY: current percentage].
Why is my rank different on each map?
Competitive ranks are stored per map, not per account. The system treats your performance on Mirage and your performance on Inferno as separate skill pools. This means you can hold a high rank on maps you have played extensively and a lower rank on maps you rarely queue. Premier mode uses one rating across all maps.
How do you get ranked in CS2?
For Competitive, you need two wins on a specific map to receive your first rank for it [VERIFY: current requirement]. For Premier, you complete 10 placement matches and then receive your initial CS Rating. Premier also requires Prime Status, which Competitive does not.
Do CS2 Competitive ranks reset?
Competitive ranks do not reset on a seasonal schedule the way Premier CS Rating does. However, both systems have inactivity decay — if you stop playing for an extended period, your rank or rating can drop. Premier ratings are also partially reset at the start of each new season [VERIFY: current seasonal reset behaviour].
